Review: Vogue 8191

I finally finished that dress!!! Today we had the final fitting w/the last adjustments.

My baby sis: She is graduating from
UMD this year!!! yit-dee-dee!! She asked me to make a dress to attend her frat's formal. She picked the pattern that I suggested but I surprised her with the fabric. Luckily she loves it and looks absolutely beautiful in it!

OK here's the review:

Vogue 8191

Size: 10

Pattern critique: Pattern labeled as "Average" but the view I made, "A" was pretty easy. The instructions read pretty good. I didn't use them. There were very few pieces so I just took my time and did my own thing. The style is very nice and elegant looking which seems the norm for Vogue patterns. My only issue was the bias cutting, so I wouldn't recommend this pattern for a true beginner. My cut pieces of fabric didn't match up, but I'm sure that was due to my inexperience with this type of cut.

Fabric: Sheer poly I found on Joann's clearance shelf last year. I think I paid about $3/yd. The lining was black poly lining fabric $2/yd.

Modifications: Since the pieces were cut on the bias it made that sheer poly really stretchy and it felt "weak" so I used stay tape instead of seam binding. (I don't really know what seam binding is.) I had to take it in on the back bodice after the fact so I added darts on each side of the bodice back. She liked the drape as is on the bodice front so we didn't add a broach or button. I think if her top were flatter we would have been better off with pinning it down.
Put a slit at the bottom back of the skirt. Didn't hem it, the fabric doesn't fray and she will only wear it once.

Results: Wow! She makes the dress look like a million bucks - like she can help it though!!! It was a lot of fun making this and seeing the final results.

The back. She's very narrow in the waist so I pinned it to add darts to tighten it up.

Kiddo
(in a tiered skirt I made) & Sis.

Ciao peeps!
